Concerns with Cyclopropane
Cyclopropane certainly had its advantages at the time of its discovery, but the dangers and cost out weighed the good.
Although Cyclopropane did its job at the time and worked as an inhaled anesthetic, prolongs exposure to the drug cause patients to have a sudden drop in blood pressure. This was due to a cardiac arrhythmia which caused the heart to beat slower, resulting in a lower blood pressure.
Despite Cyclopropane's unstable nature and strained bond angles, this anesthetic is relatively easy to contain. Like many other gases and inhalants, Cyclopropane is stored under pressure in a cylindrical metal tank. Tanks that contain gases are often color coded in order to reduce misuse or misplacement. Gases like oxygen are contained in a green tank while Cyclopropane is housed in an orange container.
